Trig*Star 2010: I have included the 2010 Chapter 9
Kick-off package.pdf (5mb) It includes: Along with this notifcation and the dates below, I hope this will answer most questions. TSPS State is excited about the momentum with Trig-Star and the SkillsUSA program. Many students are being exposed to surveying. As a Chapter, we have made some progress with Trig-Star, but there is more that can be done. We hope that the exposure from the Educators Conference in 2009 will boost participation. As always, we need your help. There are two ways that you can be involved with Trig-Star. You can make the contact with the educator and/or you can also administer the test. The proposed schedule is: Late March – Local
exam administered The Chapter 9 winners will be recognized at a Chapter Dinner and presented with a $300.00 check. The second place winner will be presented a $150.00 check and the teacher of the first place student will receive a check for $300.00. This should make most teachers think about giving up an hour. I think that Introduction along with some of the text from this e-mail should be enough for a teacher to consider the program. Please feel free to contact me directly. Please do not hit reply to this e-mail. If you need help in contacting educators or administering the test, please let me know. If you find something that does or does not work, please let me know. In case you missed it, the
following has been e-blasted to TSPS Members regarding Educator's
Retreat 2009: The Texas Society of Professional Surveyors and Lone Star College-Montgomery will host the 3rd Annual High School Educator’s Retreat for Surveying, Mapping & Geospatial Awareness June 16-18, 2009 on the campus of Lone Star College-Montgomery (in The Woodlands-Conroe area, just off I-45). The purpose of the retreat is to share with a select number of high school teachers, counselors, and educators the professions of geospatial sciences and professional land surveying in Texas. There are now a few questions on the TEKS and TAKS tests that are related to land surveying. Additionally, in 2006, the George W. Bush High Growth Job Training Initiative identified the top 14 job sectors that are expected to add substantial numbers of new jobs to our nation’s economy. The Geospatial industry was rated among the top three. More and more educators in K-12 programs across our nation are recognizing the need to incorporate geospatial thinking in their curriculums. Registration is FREE OF CHARGE. Attendees will receive a $150 stipend, a mobile GPS unit, and lesson plans (with surveying-related material to aid in classroom instruction, posters and brochures promoting the industry, as well as information that was presented during the retreat.) In addition, attendees will receive 1.6 CEUs (16 contact hours) for their participation. TSPS Chapter Sponsored Educators must submit applications by April 24 to receive priority consideration. Applicants can expect to receive notification of acceptance beginning May 4, however, applications will continue to be accepted until all seats are filled. Maximum enrollment is 35 participants. Applicants will be accepted based on the following criteria: Chapter Affiliation (Sponsorship); Curriculum Specialty (Math, IT/Computer, Geography Teachers and Technology Counselors will receive first priority); and Date of application. Note: As enrollment is limited, school affiliation will also be considered if 2 or more employees from a single school apply for acceptance into the program. Hotel/Accommodations information is pending. Educators can fill out on online application at www.tsps.org. An Educator’s Retreat photo/icon is located on the home page … applicants just click on the photo and are transferred to the reg form. Initially, registration is limited to first-time participants. If we cannot fill the 35 spots with new attendees, we will open-up registration to individuals who participated the previous 2 years. We are asking that TSPS Chapters spread the word to local teachers first and offer to sponsor the $150 stipend. Individual companies are also welcome and encouraged to select and sponsor teachers from their communities. Please make this announcement at your next Chapter meeting and/or send an email to your chapter members if you have already had your meeting. Initially, registration will be limited to teachers contacted through TSPS, then if need be, information will be sent to a listserve of high school math and science teachers across the state and registration will be open to anyone. Remember that registration is limited to the first 35 educators who sign up – so find your teachers, raise your $150 stipend, and have them sign up as soon as possible. Thank you for your support of this year’s retreat.
View Retreat Preliminary Schedule Submitted by Doug Loveday, TSPS Communications ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For Review and Comment: University of Houston Endowment Fund BACKGROUND As provided for by the Texas Surveyors Association, Gulf Coast Chapter, the original endowed scholarship fund was established in March 1984 in an approximate amount of $27,500. Instructions included that the fund benefit students in the University of Houston’s Department of Surveying Technology. Further, the income from the endowment was/is to provide funds for two scholarships for both the fall and spring semesters. An annual report was/is to be presented to the society. Additional language included requirements as set out by the Chapter and the application form to be used for the scholarships. The University was to initially screen applicants with final selection to be made by a committee from the Gulf Coast Chapter, T.S.A. The endowment was modified in January of 2000 to assist in the re-establishment of the Surveying Program and to help with equipment and other start-up needs, as follows: “Up to $10,000 of the annual distributed income from this endowment will be used to support equipment, all related equipment expenses (including insurance, repairs, etc.), faculty or program enrichment in Civil Technology to enhance surveying. The remaining and future distributed income from the endowment will be used to provide scholarship funding for students interested in pursuing a career as surveyors.” As reported by the University of Houston, the market value of the endowment as of August 31, 2007 was $107,161.29. The University of Houston Board Of Regents controls the distributable income available for expenditure according to the purpose of the endowment. It appears that recent practice has been approximately 5% of the total endowment fund is made available twice annually in accordance with the original instructions. Further, the Board of Regents for the College of Technology is the sole determiner of scholarship recipients. As a Chapter, we have no say in the application itself or the selected candidates. However, our instructions, or guidelines are used in the selection of candidates. PROPOSED AMENDED LANGUAGE We have been notified by the College of Technology that the Gulf Coast Surveyor Scholarship Endowment at the University of Houston should be modified as follows: AMEND FROM “Up to $10,000 of the annual distributed income from this endowment will be used to support equipment, all related equipment expenses (including insurance, repairs, etc.), faculty or program enrichment in Civil Technology to enhance surveying. The remaining and future distributed income from the endowment will be used to provide scholarship funding for students interested in pursuing a career as surveyors.” AMEND TO
The annual distributed income
from this endowment will be used to provide scholarships and program support
for the College of Technology. 1) A maximum of 25% of the annual distributable income may be used for program support in the Surveying Engineering Technology program, including, but not limited to, faculty and program enrichment, equipment and all related equipment expenses (including insurance, repairs, etc.) or other areas deemed to enhance surveying. 2) The remaining distributable income will be used for scholarships for students pursuing a B.S. in Surveying Engineering Technology or similar surveying program in the College of Technology. The recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by the College of Technology Scholarship Selection Committee. Please take the time to review this important proposal and, if appropriate, generate some feedback. As this is an informal referendum, we are not taking any specific tally, but your comments are important and this is an opportunity for your voice to be heard. Please direct any and all comments in connection with the UH endowment fund to:
