Standards for Professional Land Surveying in Texas

National & State Standards of Practice

Laws & Regulations:

The Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying (TBPLS) is the state regulatory agency charged, by statute, to oversee the profession for the protection of the public. The Minimum Standards of Practice must be adhered to on every land survey signed and sealed by a Registered Professional Land Surveyor licensed in Texas. The following is paraphrased from the TBPLS web site.

STATEWIDE GOAL

The priority goal will be to ensure that Texas consumers are effectively and efficiently served by high quality professionals and businesses by setting clear standards, maintaining compliance and seeking market-based solutions.

THE MISSION

The mission of the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying is to protect the residents of Texas by regulating, licensing and renewing the licenses of only competent surveyors, surveyors able to provide accurate surveys which will result in the orderly use of our physical environment.

THE PHILOSOPHY

The Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying will license only competent surveyors and will regulate the practice of surveying and will manage their resources as efficiently and effectively as possible with a commitment to excellence.

Periodically TBPLS publishes an update of Rules entitled "Professional Land Surveying Practices Act and General Rules of Procedures and Practices". The most recent publication is dated 2005 (revised 06-06). Contact TBPLS for further information related to TBPLS publications.

 

National Standards for Land Surveying:

The American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) and the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) has promulgated national standards that have been approved and accepted by the American Land Title Association (ALTA). Texas Society of Professional Surveyors Standards for Land Surveying:

The Texas Society of Professional Surveyors established standards for land surveying in Texas and publishes the "Manual of Practice for Land Surveying in the State of Texas, comprised of Standards for Land Surveying, and specifications for Categories of Surveying 1-10".  The most recent manual was published in 2007 and includes categories related to surveying from Land Title Surveying thru Geographic Information Systems.
